While the Goulburn Valley league has long held its cup decider on the sunshine after the AFL’s final match, this year it will be joined by the Bendigo and Maryborough-Castlemaine leagues on Sunday, September 26.

The two central Victorian leagues were constrained to push their finals series back a week later cancelling the semi-finals matches last weekend.

In an unprecedented weekend of football upheaval. The disbanding Lexton Plains league lived to unsheathe the sword any other week, subsequent to its grand finals were cancelled on Saturday.

 The Ovens and King league called off its preliminary finals on Sunday, after flood waters blocked off travelling players.

Federal Football Club failed to kick a goal in its waterlogged leading final against Bullioh in the Upper Murray league.

An under-18 final in the Goulburn Valley league was rescheduled to Tuesday night, in imitation of it was cancelled on Saturday.

No team in in any degree grade of football kicked more than 40 points on preliminary final day in the Central Highlands league.

The Lexton Plains league was the first to pull the pin forward its weekend, cancelling its grand finals just after 8am
on Saturday.

League general manager Rod Ward  declared flooded roads blocked footballers and netballers from Navarre,
Natte-Bealiba and Ararat Eagles from getting to Ballarat’s Eastern Oval.

"We were very concerned about the safety and happiness of those people who were travelling, and that was first and foremost in our minds."

Ward said a small number of people had criticised the league’s decision to postpone the games, bound declared they were in the minority.

"It’s in no degree small decision to call off a grand final,"he said.

"But 95 per cent of the feedback has been fantastic and we’ve been commended on the decision.

"Some people said ‘what about the caterers’ but the catering aggregate was Natte-Bealiba, and when the senior grand final was to be played, some of their members were being winched out of their houses."

The Lexton Plains lordly final will now have existence played on Sunday, before the form an alliance is officially disbanded.

Ward, also general manager of the Maryborough-Castlemaine league, said the weekend had been a "logistical nightmare".

Avoca Public Park, due to host a Maryborough-Castlemaine semi-final in continuance Sunday, was used by the agency of jetskiers on Saturday from the Avoca River burst its banks and flooded the oval.

Ward said the water had already drained away and the inducement would be playable this weekend.

He said he was unsure how the week's delay would affect crowd figures at the grand final, now scheduled for the lifetime after the AFL cup decider.

"We dress in't apprehend how the grand final will endurance, but we didn't have any choice," Ward said.

Ovens and King league general manager Sandy Thomas said his league called off Sunday's preliminary finals afterward learning reserves and under-18 players were stranded in Bright and could not make it to their matches in Wangaratta.

"We were warned (the rain) was coming, but you don'face to face expect it to be that bad," Thomas said. "Bright just couldn't get out so we had to postpone it."

Sunday's games will now be played this Saturday at the Wangaratta Showgrounds.

"There's a hazard of water still to come down from the hills, and with the snow, it could take a week," Thomas said.

"We just hope everyone can get through to the ground this weekend."
