Umpires don sunglasses

HIGH-TECH sunglasses are the latest addition to the umpires arsenal.

The Terminator-look sunnies be delivered of a built-in camera and microphone, as well as a recollection stick that can download pictures and profound for playback.

Developed by the Australian Sports Commission, the glasses were trialled during the Australian Country Football Championships and are likely to be given a aim in the AFL nearest year.

AFL NSW umpiring manager Graham Glassford said the glasses were the future for training umpires.

"These spectacles have so many possibilities," Glassford said.

"One avenue is to use the footage gathered from wearing the glasses and then employment split screen technology to play it back in line with the footage of a filmed match.

"You would see what position the referee is in, which he'sitting seeing and it would accord. us a unique opportunity to teach new umpires where they need to be to make the best decisions in a courageous.

"There are some limitations because you don't get peripheral vision that a person picks up, but as a coaching tool to individuals or group of umpires it has awesome possible."

Charlton reunion

CHARLTON Football Club, in the North Central League, will celebrate its 1989 and 1990 premierships with a reunion steady August 7.

A lunch will be held at the Blues' clubrooms from 12.30pm. Players, officials and supporters are all welcome.

VCFL on the move

THE VCFL is preparing to leave its long-term home-born, the MCG.

VCFL chief executive Glenn Scott said he was "90 per cent positive" the league would have to relocate its headquarters, possibly to Carlton's training ground, Visy Park.

Scott said the MCG was refurbishing but the VCFL had outgrown its offices and was looking with respect to "a bit more extension".

VICTORIA District team coach Ron Thomas said he was proud of his players.

That is despite the team winning just one of its eight matches at the Australian Country Football Championships.

Thomas said Vic District had “everyone looking over their protuberance” on the first day of the carnival.

Vic District defeated NSW by 31 points, but lost to Queensland by 27 points, ACT by seven points and Vic Major by 14 points on epoch one.

"We played four games on that first daytime (Thursday) and we were really making a challenge," he said.

"We played so easily in all four games, but won only one.

"But to run the ACT and Vic Major to such a close result in both games was an absolutely unpaid achievement.”

On day two, Vic District went down to Western Australia and South Australia, then lost to NSW and Western Australia in the conflict as far as concerns the minor placings on Sunday.

Thomas reported Vic District’s opponents had "more of everything, shoal desperation".

"We knew we were coming from the bottom because all the other states have the opportunity to select from the major leagues, where our boys come from the small country towns," he said.

"We just fought it out the best we possibly could and I give true credit to the players, the clubs to which place they come from and the families who be seized of travelled up for the carnival."

Nar Nar Goon pocket rocket Matthew Wade was awarded the Bob Templeton medal for Vic District’s best player over the course of the carnival.

"In these competitions, someone lifts and really presents and improves out of sight and that was Matthew Wade," Thomas said.

"And Steve Schultz always led by the agency of example and had another due carnival."

Schultz took on the captaincy of the team after Elmore’session Andy Grant was forced to go away for personal reasons on the day of the carnival.

The Kalkee stalwart excelled despite the added trust, and was named in the All-Australian team.

Josh Bode bags 31 goals

DENILIQUIN Rovers playing coach Josh Bode (pictured above) smashed a series of records at what time he booted a whopping 31 goals last weekend.

Bode's Rovers hosted Wunghnu on Saturday, defeating their guests 57.21 (363) to 1.1 (7) in the Picola and District alliance's North West division.

Bode'sitting 194-point contribution, which included eight behinds, bettered his personal best of six goals in one match and broke the club's foregoing record of 18.

"I normally don't play full-forward," Bode said.

"I'm an onballer, but at half-time I had 15 (goals) and the guys just told me to stay there."

The 34-year-old said the Roos had been gearing up for a big win in opposition to bottom-feeder Wunghnu.

"We needed the percentage, as Jerilderie, Blighty and us were all on the point the same (on the ladder) so we just needed an extra buffer," Bode said.

Bode's record haul helped conduct his team the win they needed to take the Roos from sixth to fifth on the ladder.

Playing at home also had its advantages for Hepburn's Lee Cox, who kicked his 100th goal in opposition to the season on Saturday.

Cox booted 10 majors in the Burras' 117-point victory over Dunnstown in the Central Highlands league.

Cox is the third player to reach the milestone this season, following Golden Square'sitting Grant Weeks and Bairnsdale's Mathew Davidson.

Meanwhile, Macy Hambrook has been making waves for Omeo-Benambra in the Omeo and District form a unite's under-16 competition.

The 14-year-old averages 8.62 goals each match and has notched up 100 goals for the second season in a row.

Hambrook kicked 11 goals in Saturday's younger match, by his team clinching a 31-point conquest over Swifts Creek.

The star forward also lined up for the seniors, where he made a five-goal dent in Swifts Creek's 28-point conquest.

Warragul teams pummelled

IT WAS a dark day for footy fans in Warragul after both of the township’s football teams were pummelled on Saturday.

Warragul Industrials surprised everyone in the Ellinbank and District league when they lost to Garfield 19.14 (128) to 2.3 (15).

Garfield president Gerry Cunningham said the win was steady more wonderful, given that four of the Stars' best players were injured.

"We played the best we've played all year and they played their worst," Cunningham said.

Warragul Gulls also came not upon worse for wear later than playing Maffra in the Gippsland league.

The winless Gulls were no match for the Eagles, who are still equal in number one in the league after their 13.26 (104) to 1.3 (9) victory.

VICTORIA’S stellar performance at the Australian Country Football Championships was reinforced when eight Vic Major players were named in the All-Australian crew.

Rochester’s Guy Campbell was named on the half-back row in the All-Australian team and was also awarded the David Code medal for Vic Major’sitting best player throughout the carnival.

Golden Square gun Grant Weeks was named full-forward in the team of the carnival and also took home the goalkicking award for his 17 majors.

Other Victorian All-Australians included Simon O’Keefe (Koroit), Justin Berry (Cranbourne), Ryan O’Sullivan (Tooleybuc-Manangatang) and Kristan Height (Echuca).

Victoria’s Peter Knights was named coach of the All-Australian squad.

Vic Major’s road to ACFC glory was tainted by just one loss – to reigning champion, the ACT – in the preliminary rounds.

Most officials had predicted Vic Major and ACT would again play away in the grand final, but the home side suffered two surprise losses on day two of the carnival and was knocked out of contention for the meridian prize.

Knights said he was “thrilled’’ for his players.

"It’s just a fantastic group of boys. We started off eight weeks since with this program, so it’s been a long journey and this was the place that we needed to receive to," Knights uttered.

"They’ve showed that team-first attitude right from the start."

Knights would not sincere out individual players for praise, but said his leadership group of Joe McLaren (Koroit), Jarrod Edwards (Redan), Dan Leslie (North Albury), Campbell, Height and Brad Murray (Echuca) had been inspiring.

"They’ve been weighty example-setters despite the whole carnival," Knights before-mentioned.
