Victim ‘unsteady’ before death
A SUBURBAN footballer who died during grand final celebrations in Geelong was “very very drunk” and variable on his feet before the incident, a court heard today.
During a committal hearing at Geelong Magistrates’ Court for East Geelong football club reserves player Daniel Singleton, witness Callen Inderberg said he spoke to the victim, Nathan Alsop, about 20 minutes before he hit the ground after allegedly being punched, the Herald Sun reports.
Mr Inderberg said Mr Alsop – a reserves teammate of Mr Singleton – was slurring his words, unsteady on his feet and had urinated steady the oval towards the clubhouse in the lead up to the event.
He said he did not see Mr Singleton punch Mr Alsop and barely saw the prey falling to the ground.
“It was kind of reasonable like a casual flop almost,” Mr Inderberg aforesaid.
Witness Gerard Henderson denied he heard Mr Alsop rehearse Mr Singleton that he knew he was having sex with his wife in the minutes leading up to the incident.
Mr Anderson told the court that Mr Alsop had accused Mr Singleton of “taking his wife to the footy”.
Nathan Alsop, 37, died just before midnight on September 12 last, as he joined in celebrations for the premiership winning East Geelong Football Club senior team.
He was survived through mate Tara and brace children, Finn, 4, and Meg, 2.
The committal hearing continues.
