Vic Major win ACFC flag
VICTORIA has decisively defeated South Australia in the grand conclusive of the Australian Country Football Championships in Canberra today.
Vic Major nailed six of the first seven goals of the match and led all day in its 23.13 (151) to 9.12 (66) victory.
Golden Square superboot Grant Weeks booted five goals, including three in the first term.
Echuca’s Kristan Height kicked four, and was named among Victoria’s best players alongside obstinate midfielder David Clark (Corowa-Rutherglen), Andrew McLean (St Mary’s), Guy Campbell (Rochester), Justin Berry (Cranbourne) and Simon O’Keefe (Koroit).
Campbell was awarded the David Code medal for Victoria’s best mimic above the top the course of the carnival.
At quarter duration, coach Peter Knights’ praised his team’s defensive work over the ground.
"Our first three goals came from a shepherd, a tackle, and a smother by (Jarrod) Edwards," Knights said.
"The things that set up our offensive thrust is the defensive work.
"We must be permanent that from start to finish."
"That’s what we wanted, to get away quickly, and we did that," he told The Weekly Times.
Knights praised his leadership team, including captain Joe McLaren (Koroit), vice-captain Edwards and legate vice-captain Dan Leslie (North Albury).
"It’s hard to single anyone out but I’d bring forth to give them special praise," he reported.
Victoria’s District league team, coached by Ron Thomas, finished extreme at the carnival after losing its two matches this morning.
